Job Description Summary

The Department of Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Technological University is searching for qualified candidates to inspire the next generation of engineering students by implementing dynamic problem and project based education in our integrated first year engineering program. We invite applications for one or more lecturer positions in Engineering Fundamentals, home of the Michigan Tech First-Year Engineering Program and the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree program.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Anticipated teaching needs include first-year engineering classes, with opportunities to teach other advanced courses in general and systems engineering. Typical first-year topics include engineering problem solving, engineering design, computer programming, and solid modeling. First-year courses are taught in a flipped class format emphasizing active and collaborative learning. Although the primary duty will be teaching, there is an expectation of collaboration on STEM-education research and service.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Qualifications include a PhD or masters degree in engineering, STEM Education, or related field. Applicants with comparable credentials are also encouraged to apply.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

 

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● previous teaching or curricular experience with first-year engineering students
● terminal degree in engineering, a related STEM field, or STEM education
● research in engineering education
● PE License and/or PMP Certification
● substantial coursework in a business discipline
● MS in business or an MBA

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● strong interpersonal skills
● demonstrated ability to work with diverse student, faculty, and community populations
● demonstrated teaching ability

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● advanced computer skills, particularly MATLAB or other programming languages
● engineering design
● data acquisition and control
● CAD software

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

 

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The anticipated start date is August 16, 2021. Initial appointment is anticipated at the Lecturer level, but exceptional candidates will be considered for appointment as Senior or Principal Lecturer, Professor of Practice, or Assistant Professor. Michigan Tech has an established career pathway and promotion structure for non-tenure lecturer lines.
