Job Description Summary MTRI is seeking a motivated professional to help support multiple projects for our government and commercial customers. The Research Engineer/Scientist I – Computational Scientist will work with senior engineers and scientists to research, develop, and evaluate algorithms for a variety of signal and image processing, and geospatial applications. The successful candidate will have a solid background in applied mathematics, physics, statistics, or engineering, as well as strong computer science skills including software prototyping and algorithm design. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs.2. Provide technical, analytical and numerical support for research and development projects in the areas of mathematics, statistics, programming, electrical engineering, and signal processing.3. Develop prototype software and evaluate performance on data.4. Contribute technical expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports.5. Prepare and deliver reports or presentations of research projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate.6. Contribute to the generation of proposals and external funding.7. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) Master’s degree in mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a similar related field, and 1 year related experienceORBachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a similar related field, and 3 years related experience Required Experience (minimum requirements) • Solid theoretical background in one of the following: applied mathematics, physics, or electrical engineering. • Experience in translating scientific theory into algorithms.• Experience prototyping mathematical algorithms.• Experience in software development.• Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, Julia, or equivalent language.• Experience evaluating the performance of algorithms on simulated and/or measured data. Desirable Education and/or Experience • Experience with the development and application of detection and classification algorithms.• Experience with signal and image processing or geospatial applications.Experience leading technical teams. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.• Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills.• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment. Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities • Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas at meetings and symposia.• Ability to contribute to competitive grant proposals.
