Job Description Summary MTRI is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional to support multiple projects for our government and commercial clients. The Assistant Research Engineer - Robotics Engineer will provide support for current research programs utilizing Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS), Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV), and virtual robotic testing environments. The successful candidate will have experience with software development for deployable systems, such as Raspberry Pi and Jetson Nano. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org). Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Develop software for deployable systems as part of ongoing MTRI research efforts. 2. Develop software for simulated robotics environments, such as ROS.3. Assist with maintaining hardware associated with UAS and UGV assets.4. Recommend hardware and software solutions by comparing pros and cons of custom versus off-the-shelf alternatives.5. Coordinate requirements and schedules, contribute to team meetings, troubleshoot development and production problems.6. Continue to improve performance by being aware of new technologies and software products, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.7. Flexibly work across multiple task areas.8. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.9. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) Bachelor’s degree in robotics or closely related field. Required Experience (minimum requirements) • Experience with software development, preferably for deployable systems.• Experience with building and/or modifying robotics systems, such as UAS, UGV, UUV or other robotic platforms.• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.• Experience with one or more of the following programming languages/software: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, or equivalent. Desirable Education and/or Experience • Experience with ROS (Robotic Operating System).• Experience with sensors.• Experience programming for the hardware/software interface.• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams to perform research, solve technical problems, and/or develop software tools. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) • Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.• Excellent written/oral communication skills.• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.• Ability to take direction, but work without continuous oversight.• Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties.• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
