Job Description Summary

Manages and leads business and technical operations of the Microfabrication Facility {MFF) for the University. Ensures that the MFF and specialty systems are fully operational and comply with University standards for Integrated safety management, ESH/QA, and general operations. The MFF managing director is expected to closely work with the faculty director to establish and manage the operational and financial condition of the MFF as It responds to the current and future technological needs of research and education with the University. Oversees a user training and certification program as required to gain access to the facility, and Is responsible for developing primary operational documents as required by the University. Responsible for leading and coordinating general facility maintenance, Including all subsystems and tools. Responsible for building a high performing student team and coordinate with technical staff across the University.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Develop, Implement and maintain an effective training program that is the basis of granting operational access to the MFF and specific Instruments. Trains and
supervises users.
2. Develop, maintain, and enforce laboratory safety procedures. Manages and leads the efficient and safe operations of the MFF.
3. Direct the development of a microfabrication chemical hygiene plan and a supplies management plan to Insure that the laboratory meets federal and state guidelines for safety. Assures the operation meets all standards and requirements.
4. Develop and recommend microfabrication equipment usage rates based on projected depreciation rates and equipment valuation.
5. Develop budgets, analyze expenses and revenues, and compile financial reports.
6. Develop and oversee an expansion plan for existing and future laboratory capabilities, Including but not limited to: cleanroom facility expansion, wet chemical processing equipment, high temperature diffusion and oxidation furnaces, enhanced plasma chemistry and deposition, and nanoscaled materials and device characterization facilities.
7. Develops and carries out a preventative maintenance program for the MFF. Provides preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer guidelines or as determined by use.
8. Maintains records/databases and prepares routine and ad hoc reports on facility operations, maintenance and resource use.
9. Supervises and works with contractors and vendor personnel to Install, troubleshoot, maintain and develop complex instruments and systems.
10. Manages resources, equipment and materials In accordance with approved budget. Develop, monitor and optimize the financial operation of the MFF to ensure sustainable operation.
11. Functional supervision Is exercised over support staff and students.
12. Communicate position requirements for training needs to appropriate personnel to gain necessary resources. Ensure that employee training records are maintained.
13. Ensure adequate monitoring and resources to provide for safety compliance.
14. Encourage continuous Improvement practices among employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goa Is and leadership skills.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering. material science and engineering. physics, chemical engineering or related field and 3-5 years of relevant Industrial or academic experience/equivalent, OR
• Master's degree in electrical engineering. material science and engineering. physics, chemical engineering or related field and 5-8 years of relevant industrial or academic experience/equivalent, OR
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. material science and engineering, physics, chemical engineering or related field and 8-10 years of relevant Industrial or academic experience/equivalent.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Three years relevant professional industrial or educational microfabrication or process technology experience, depending on education level (see Required Education)
• Experience with academic micro- and nano-fabrication facilities
• Experience in training users, preferably experience with university graduate students as well as technical staff users
• Experience with a wide variety of processing capabilities and instruments
• Experience in managing a facility budget, including salaries, materials, service contracts, and instrument purchase
• Experience in ESH/QA policies and procedures
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with research scientists and students, to work in a team, and to interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Five years related microfabrication experience, depending on education level

• Five or more years managing micro-or nano-fabrication operations
• Scientific and proposal writing

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Three years of instrumentation experience appropriate to microfabrication equipment and Instrumentation. depending on education level
• Two years chemical process experience
• Excellent organizational, communication, and management skills
• Demonstrated ability to deliver oral presentations
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and support personnel at all levels
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and manage time effectively
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
• Demonstrated leadership of safety principles and practices

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, handle or feel an object; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
