Job Description Summary

The Research Engineer I will be responsible for setting up laboratory equipment for undergraduate engineering laboratory courses and for repairing, maintaining, and calibrating electrical and electronic equipment used in the department’s research laboratories. Will participate in maintaining department testing equipment. Provide technical support services, including installation of instrumentation and data acquisition systems. Serve as the topical expert on LabVIEW programming, instrumentation and data acquisition systems, electrical system and electronic component design, and debugging/testing of electrical and electronic equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Provide support to undergraduate engineering laboratories by setting up electronic equipment and other test apparatus.
2. Instruct graduate teaching assistants on the proper operation of equipment for undergraduate teaching laboratories.
3. Design, specify, order, construct, wire and solder custom laboratory equipment for undergraduate teaching laboratories and research laboratories.
4. Maintain/calibrate department testing equipment and provide instruction on its usage.
5. Purchase laboratory consumables, replacement items and/or repair parts.
6. Provide technical expertise on electrical, instrumentation, automation and LabVIEW programming for Senior Design and Enterprise teams.
7. Provide technical support to graduate-level research projects at remote labs (APS, AERB, etc)
8. Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic equipment.
9. Maintain inventory of electronic equipment and supplies.
10. Supervisory Responsibilities: Functional supervision may be exercised over graduate and undergraduate students.
11. Provide technical support for Senior Capstone Design student teams and/or Enterprise teams.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or related engineering and science fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Two years of experience in an electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in the troubleshooting and repair of electrical/electronic equipment.
• Working knowledge of computers and software in an office environment.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Masters’ degree in electrical engineering, or related engineering and science fields.
• Five years of experience in an electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, repair, and calibrate engineering test equipment.
• Demonstrated experience in the selection, use, and calibration of transducers and other types of instrumentation for measurement of physical phenomena.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to meet and manage deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple work projects and types of activity.
• Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to detail.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Experience in the operation and maintenance of engineering testing machines, such as MTS hydraulic test rigs, Tinius-Olsen machines, particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and similar devices.
• Experience in the use of software tools for simulation-based design (MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, etc.)
• Experience in the selection, installation, and use of strain gages and associated electronic equipment.
• Experience in the use of data acquisition systems and software.
• Experience in the development of embedded microprocessor applications (i.e. Arduino, *berry Pi).
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of engine emission test equipment, such as the Pierberg AMA 4000 emissions bench.
• Experience with control systems as applied to mechanical systems (mechatronics).
• Experience with automotive electrical and electronic systems, including those found on hybrid electric vehicles.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Michigan Tech’s vehicle use requirements.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

• May be required to work in a laboratory or shop environment in the presence of operating machinery.
• Demonstrated ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Noise levels are typically moderate.
