Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University, a nationally recognized leader in engineering, computing, and science education and research, invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty or professor of practice position in construction management and engineering. The position will be in the Construction Management Program, under both the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Business and Economics.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

The successful candidate will collaboratively develop and teach undergraduate classes and laboratories, create innovative instructional materials and project-based experiences, develop external funding for research and projects with industry, establish and sustain a record of scholarly achievement, contribute to program assessment and accreditation activities, student advising, and other departmental service. Opportunities for research collaboration are prevalent across the University.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • To be considered for a tenure-track position, the applicant must have an earned PhD in civil engineering with an emphasis on construction engineering and/or construction management, or a closely related engineering or management field by May 31, 2020.

    To be considered for a professor of practice position, the applicant must have at least a MS degree in construction management or a closely related engineering or management field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Tenure-track position: The applicant must have the ability to conduct research and develop partnerships with contractors, industry, and others.

    Demonstrated development of funded research and/or scholarly achievements resulting in peer reviewed publications.

    Professor of practice position: Evidence of five years of relevant experience in the North American construction industry is required.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Demonstrated effective and engaging teaching experience at a university level.

    Experience in BIM, structures, building utility systems and/or sustainable design and construction.

    In addition for the tenure-track position having relevant experience in the North American construction industry is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Versatility and technical expertise to teach fundamental courses such as statics, strength of materials, construction materials, BIM and/or building utility systems.

    Strong oral and written communication, computer, and presentation skills.

    Ability to draw from relevant construction management experiences and teach a variety of construction management courses.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Proficiency in Revit, Navisworks, or similar software.

    Appropriate professional registrations and/or licenses.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
